Transfer of Longhorn site halted pending Congressional Inquiries
By JULIA ROBB, Special Projects Editor
KARNACK – The permit process by which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service can manage the remaining acreage available at the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant as a part of the existing National Wildlife Refuge is on hold until Congressional inquiries are resolved, a U.S. Army spokesperson said at a meeting here Tuesday.

"When a senator expresses interest, it kind of stops things from rolling along," Rose Zeiler told the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant Restoration Advisory Board, and community residents.

"This is a political thing, this is not Army process," she said.

The senator in question is Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, Zeiler said, later adding that she believes government officials are attempting to ascertain the remaining property's condition.
