Transfer of Longhorn site halted pending Congressional Inquiries
By JULIA ROBB, Special Projects Editor
KARNACK The permit process by which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service can manage the remaining acreage available at the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant as a part of the existing National Wildlife Refuge is on hold until Congressional inquiries are resolved, a U.S. Army spokesperson said at a meeting here Tuesday.
"When a senator expresses interest, it kind of stops things from rolling along," Rose Zeiler told the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant Restoration Advisory Board, and community residents.
"This is a political thing, this is not Army process," she said.
The senator in question is Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, Zeiler said, later adding that she believes government officials are attempting to ascertain the remaining property's condition.
