“CROQUET IS OKAY” BENEFIT TOURNAMENT – OCTOBER 8, 2005
Mark your calendar:

For all of you who spend your spare time playing the gentle game of polo, there is another game out there that is fun, challenging, and a bit less strenuous.

The game of CROQUET, for many people conjures up images of country houses with large lawns or Lewis Carroll’s description of Alice’s game in Wonderland with flamingos, hedgehogs, and playing cards. But contemporary croquet is far more than a quirky pastime with Victorian associations. A game of tactics and skill, this sport was first practiced in France in the XI century under the name of ‘jeu de mail”. Borrowed by the British around 1300, it was modified over the centuries: the Scots made golf out of it, the Irish turned it into CROQUET. Louis XIV, suffering from an inability to play during the winter, miniaturized it on an indoor table and laid the basis of billiards

Coming to a park near you, a benefit tournament, sponsored by the lovely ladies of the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, is playing in Jefferson on October 8. This worthy endeavor is one of numerous projects to raise funds to “Save the Jefferson Playhouse”, one of Texas most beautiful historic structures definitely worth saving. Recently named as one of the ten most endangered historic places in the state by Preservation Texas.

Sometimes called the “Queen of Games” and oh so very British, sixteen teams of two, dressed in white will compete on four fields. Refreshments and a catered lunch will be served to spectators.

What better way to link the past with the present as you reminisce of days centuries ago. This unique sport inspires etiquette and elegance, gentility and grace for players and spectators alike to enjoy.
