V-J Day ceremony planned
By HILLARY S. MEEKS, News Messenger

Downtown Marshall will be transported in time to its World War II days on Sept. 2 as businesses, the T&P Depot Museum and the Harrison County Historical Commission combine to honor the 60th anniversary of Japan's surrender to the United States.

Because so many people were involved in the war effort – both at the war front and the home front – the HCHC is requesting all people who contributed to the cause to sign up ahead of time for an individualized certificate honoring them.

"We want people to call in whether they worked at the Thiokol war plant, air raid watches, Red Cross people, even the guys that delivered the telegrams – even though it was a horrible job," said Jennifer Larned, chairman of the HCHC committee producing this V-J Day event.

Ms. Larned said the Texas Historical Commission requested each historical society in the state to produce a simultaneous event. A full day of presentations are slated from 9 a.m. to sundown, she said.
