Lexie Palmore feels at home on the water
By JULIA ROBB, Special Projects Editor MNM
UNCERTAIN Lexie Palmore stands in the Graceful Ghost pilot house guiding her steamboat down a Caddo Lake channel, her hands on the wheel and her eyes on the murky water, the same way Mark Twain stood when he piloted steamboats down the Mississippi.
The Ghost's steam engine which turns the boat's paddlewheels huffs and puffs like a winded giant.
Tourists who paid Palmore to take them on one of the Ghost's regular 1½-hour lake tours stand at the upper and lower rails, mesmerized by the green expanse of water wilderness. The breeze on the boat's upper level is as cool as possible for noon in July.
