If city has way, strip club won't take off
Marshall City Commission Chairman Ed Smith believes that someone might build a strip club within or near the city limits, and he is out to stop them.

Tonight, at the commission's regular meeting, Smith will ask commissioners to tighten the city's sexually-explicit business ordinance and will ask City Attorney Todd Fitts to investigate the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction – the amount of land the city can control outside its limits.

Smith added the topic as a discussion item; therefore, commissioners will not be asked to vote on any ordinance additions or changes at the meeting.

Smith said he also will ask Fitts to ask Harrison County Judge Wayne McWhorter and other county officials to review their sexually-explicit business ordinance.

Smith said he wants to know if the county needs to tighten its ordinance, and if so, whether officials are willing to do so.

Century 21 Realtor Evan Welch confirmed Wednesday that someone had approached his firm about three weeks ago on behalf of Gregg County residents looking for a site to build a strip club.
