Hyacinth taking over Caddo Lake
KARNACK – Water hyacinth plants already cover at least 1,000 acres at Caddo Lake, 500 more than were covered last summer at the height of the growing season, Greater Caddo Lake Association President Robert Speight said Tuesday.

If the problem is not solved, major areas of the lake will be closed to boat traffic, including the boat roads, he said.

Speight spoke at a community meeting at the Karnack Community Center.

Boats cannot travel through water hyacinth. Hyacinth is also blamed for reducing oxygen in the lake, which leads to fish kills and areas so lacking in oxygen that fish cannot live in them. -5/4-
