MNM OUR VIEW - Looking for truth
If there is any surprise in President Bush's decision to commute the prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby it is that the president did not grant Libby an outright pardon.

That could happen later, so it is not to be ruled out. However, for now, Libby will be spared prison and will only be left with a $250,000 fine for his felony conviction for lying to a grand jury. Rarely would we use the word "only" in the same sentence as $250,000, but Libby will never have to pay that money. It will be paid for him from his legal defense fund.

In an odd way we find the commutation of Libby's sentence fitting because his only real crime was blind loyalty to an administration and to people who clearly do not deserve such devotion. He was only doing what he was asked to do, most likely by Vice President Dick Cheney, but perhaps by President Bush himself through Cheney. We will never know.
