City to consider making tourism separate entity
By Erica Facer

The Marshall City Commission will consider approval of establishing an independent Convention and Visitors Bureau at their meeting Thursday.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 401 S. Alamo St.

Destination Development has recommended that the CVB be a new organization, with a new board, a new, or revised, staff, possibly a new location, and strong partnerships with organizations including the chamber.

A statement from Destination Development said, "We do firmly believe that this is the answer to create a NEW organization with a narrow focus: to implement the 'Marshall Branding, Development & Marketing Action Plan.'"

The city will consider a vote to use Hotel Occupancy Tax funds to help fund the operations of the new Convention and Visitors Bureau as of Jan. 1, 2008.

Destination Development consultant John Kelsh said, "During this year 2007, the CVB corporation should be formed, board members appointed, office space established, create their Web site and other items."

The estimate cost of the new CVB has not yet been determined by Destination Development.

City commissioners will also consider authorizing the City Attorney, Todd Fitts, and city staff to investigate setting up the new CVB as a non-profit organization. The commission will also set a date for a joint meeting of the city commission and the Tourism Task Force Steering Committee to discuss upcoming actions relating to the tourism plan.
