Texas Baptists turning green - but not all the way

DALLAS - Texas Baptist leaders are working to block Republican Gov. Rick Perry's plan to speed the approval process for 18 new coal-fired power plants - an unusual move considering the largest national Baptist organization officially opposes environmental activism. The Texans stress they're not jumping into full-blown activism, avoiding high-profile marches and demonstrations, but even a small move toward environmentalism is significant. "This is cutting edge stuff for Baptists - even moderate Baptists," said Bruce T. Gourley, associate director of The Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
