A few years ago I was sitting on my back porch with my dog Dutch, feeling bad for him and bad about myself. I wasn't spending enough time with my 6-year-old chocolate lab and had never given him enough affection. I put my arm around him and said "I'm so sorry." Dutch jumped up and bounced all around me (the porch shook when he bounced, as he weighed 90 pounds), telling me, in the only way he knew, "It's okay, it's okay, I love you I love you." Of course, it wasn't okay. Dutch was a very difficult dog and I had a stressful reporting job that kept me emotionally exhausted, but Dutch was my responsibility.
