Opinion: Marshall as an artists haven -- by Jay Webb
Now that Destination Development has come to town and made a few recommendations, heres another. I attended the public presentation and was pleased that the topic was on cleaning up, adding a fresh face, and directing people to our community, and County Seat. When the topic of painting facades of some of the buildings was presented, it struck a chord. Why not develop an area for the artists in our community, and attract other artists? If you were to have traveled to Santa Fe New Mexico in the early 1960s, you would have seen that exact dynamic being cultivated. Santa Fes historic downtown square was run down, and used as a Native Indian trading post on a monthly basis. Well, Santa Fe, being the capitol of the State of New Mexico, wanted to improve this area, and make it the center of the tourist area. Neighboring Taos did exactly the same thing, and they developed over a few years, arguably, the stellar artist colony of the country. Now, Marshall cant draw that type of growth and popularity, but Marshall can use many of the areas older buildings that are the bones of the community.
