Henderson, Carthage earn national title

Two East Texas communities once again have been named National Main Street Cities, according to the Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Carthage, which has won this national recognition every year since 2000, and Henderson, which has won the honor four of the past five years, are among 52 Texas cities designated as 2007 National Main Street Cities.
The recognition is based on a progress report tabulated at the Texas Main Street office in Austin, which is part of the Texas Historical Commission. A city must score 90 on a scale of 105 that covers 10 areas of community improvement.
"It's important to have evidence of historic preservation, broad-based community support and people working hard to make it sustainable," said Texas Main Street Program Coordinator Debra Farst.
