Arsenic and Old Lace
CONTACT: M Thomas 903-665-2310
The murderously funny comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace" will open The Opera House Theatre Players season this weekend on Nov 17 and 18 at 7:30 pm at the Russell Building, 121 Austin St, in downtown Jefferson.

The comedy by Joseph Keselring has been called "the funniest play about murder ever written" when it opened on Broadway in 1941. It was produced in London during the WW II year of 1942 and was later transferred to a motion picture starring Cary Grant and Priscilla Lane in 1944. It is the story of two little old ladies who live in an old and rather shabby house in Brooklyn. Their nephew, Mortimer, is the light of their life. A brother who lives with the sisters is certifiably "nuts" and believes he is Pres Teddy Roosevelt who is building the Panama Canal in the basement. Actually, the "canal" turns out to be the final resting place for numerous elderly men who come to the house looking for a room to rent - only to find their final resting place rather quickly after ingesting the sister's homemade, Elderberry wine. The farce gets more hilarious when assorted visitors, policemen, and Mortimer's fiancee and "bad" brother show up and wonder why the sisters and their brother are so giddy at the prospect of preparing a new "canal lock".

Tickets are sold out for Friday's opening night but some tickets are still available for Saturday's performance at this writing. Tickets are $10 per person and $6 for children under 12 years and are available at the Chamber of Commerce 903-665-2672 or call 903-665-2310.
