City's bond elections pass
By ROBIN Y. RICHARDSON, News Messenger

Marshall Police Department and Marshall Fire Department will have new facilities and the city's parks will receive several improvements as a result of the general obligation bond election's final results Tuesday.

Voters approved both Propositions 1 and 2 on the ballot, which proposes to use $5.5 million to construct new police and fire stations and allocate $730,000 to improve the city's parks. For proposition one, 3,699 voted for it and 1,355 voted against it. For proposition two, 3,258 voted for it and 1,791 voted against it.

"The thing I'm impressed about is all across the city – wealthy areas, areas that are blue collar, clearly Democrat and clearly Republican supported both bond issues across the board," said Gail Beil, president of the Friends of the Marshall Parks organization.

She said the results show that "this is a city that wants a better quality of life, a more efficient and safer law enforcement and fire department and wants parks to look (good)."

According to early voting results, 2,298 people voted for proposition one while 841 voted against. For proposition two, 2,007 voted for the proposition and 1,130 voted against.

Police Chief Jim Wilkins and Fire Chief Kenneth "Buzz" Snyder were both pleased with the results.
