Julia Robb: The Return of the Native -- Words, mere words
When I was a kid I loved art, although I never thought of it as art. Books and poems could make me cry and some paintings were so beautiful they made me want to crawl inside them. Amazing Grace played on bagpipes seemed to gather all the worlds sorrows yet purify them in some clear stream I did not understand.
I still dont understand, at least not with my head.
I once read that art must be transcendent. According to Websters Dictionary, to transcend means to rise above.
When connected to art, that concept doesnt make much sense. Andy Warhols famous Campbell tomato soup can is supposed to be art and its bigger than life, but doesnt seem to rise above anything.
