New Town effort to revitalization advancing by steps

Having experienced success with its New Town revitalization project, the Historic Landmark Preservation Board agreed Monday to continue the trend for another year.

"We've used New Town as a guinea pig and that's working very well," Assistant City Manager Janet Cook told the board. "We helped form a neighbor association. (Now) I think we should move forward with the next step – and we're taking baby steps – and that is (establishing) a named historic neighborhood. "The strength of this plan is in building neighborhoods from the bottom up," Ms. Cook said of a list of objectives adopted by the board. The plan contains some 16 items, three of which were accomplished this past year. Suggested for action this year are: "Designate historic neighborhoods, conservation districts and historic districts;
