Rabies in Northeast Texas -- by Dr. Jack Sanders
As a veterinarian with knowledge of the prevalence of rabies in Northeast Texas this year, I consider it my duty to report the following incidence:

Saturday, September 9, 2006 between 12:00 and 1:00 P. M. my wife and I were approaching the intersection of Grand Ave. and North Washington St. in Marshall. Almost simultaneously we observed a lifeless black and white ball of fur under the traffic light. At that moment a distinct odor permeated the air. We immediately realized the object to be a skunk. I drove directly to the Marshall police Department a few blocks away to request the animal be removed before some innocent person handled it with no gloves or protection. I later learned at Second Saturday event this skunk had been under that signal at least since 7:30 A.M, probably longer.

Coincidentally, the day before, Friday September 9, 2006, I received the following notice:
