It is time for Marshall to reassess how it spends its one-half cent sales tax revenue already dedicated to economic development, a state official said Friday.
Robert Johnson, economic development specialist for the Texas Historical Commission's Main Street Program, said during an out briefing after spending a good part of last week in Marshall, that it evidently has been 20 years since the city seriously considered the options on how those funds are spent.
"The city of Marshall fully impressed me," Johnson said after visiting with residents, business leaders, the city commission and other local officials last week.
But, he said, times and options have changed since 1986 when Marshall committed a half-cent of its sales tax revenues strictly to industrial development. It is time for Marshall to re-focus investment, strategic planning and personnel resources on improving quality of life, Johnson said.
