Another Memory from August 1, 1966 -- submitted by Gail Brown
I know the Ms. Brown did not submit this with the intent of it being published. I found it very interesting and thought other readers would enjoy it also.
==========
Ron and Jack– I found your stories on Charlie Whitman very interesting. I know there are lots of stories, and mine is not quite so interesting, but thought I’d share nonetheless.

I was working in Dallas that summer, after graduating from UT in the spring. The radio was on, so we all listened to the news of the Tower sniper(s) all afternoon. Of course I was stunned, remembering how many times I’d crossed the campus on the grounds around the Tower, the Latin class I had in the Tower, and how many times I’d been up to the observation deck as a kid growing up in Austin.

When the lone sniper was named, I remembered that my BR (before Rex) boyfriend had talked about Charlie. He was a good friend of Kathy’s, from high school, I think, and knew Charlie well, too. I don’t remember why their names came up (this was several months before I met Rex in 1964), or why I even remembered the names, but David had told me about how Charlie had landed in the brig, during his Marine stint, because of his temper. I think perhaps he was concerned for Kathy.

Thanks to you both for the memories – sad as they are – thanks.

Gail
