When I opened the paper this morning and read the headlines, UT Looks Back, I read the article from a different perspective from most others.
On the morning of August 1, 1966, I was at my summer job sitting at a drawing board in an architects office in Austin. Someone rushed into the office and shouted, There is a sniper on the Tower.
Radio went on all stations were reporting on the incident. I guess I have not changed much my first thought was to take off work, grab my camera and head to campus. Before I could leave I heard that the entire campus area was blocked off so I remained in the office and listened to the radio.
I did not realize how much the incident would touch my life at this point. Even when they began to report that Charlie had been shot, I did not know it was the Charlie Whitman I knew.
