On the morning of August 1, 1966, I was at my summer job – sitting at a drawing board in an architect’s office in Austin. Someone rushed into the office and shouted, “There is a sniper on the Tower.”

Radio went on – all stations were reporting on the incident. I guess I have not changed much – my first thought was to take off work, grab my camera and head to campus. Before I could leave I heard that the entire campus area was blocked off so I remained in the office and listened to the radio.

I did not realize how much the incident would touch my life at this point. Even when they began to report that Charlie had been shot, I did not know it was the Charlie Whitman I knew.
