Editorial: Get moving on the Voting Rights Act
We can't explain why our U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Republican from Tyler, would work to try to limit the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, but his amendment to the proposed extension is one thing that held up the process.
Gohmert's amendment to renew the law for 10 years rather than 25 was one of four offered Thursday to try to change the bill.
All were sponsored by Republicans and all are opposed by the Republican leadership, putting Gohmert and the others outside the Republican mainstream at least on this issue. In the end, he re-entered the stream and voted for final passage of the bill.
Gohmert's amendment went down to a sound defeat of 288-134. Good. Good. Good. The other amendments failed by even larger margins. Hooray!
