Denzel Washington Visits Wiley College

Wiley College hosted Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington on Monday and Tuesday, June 19th and 20th as well as several alumni who participated as Wiley debaters on the stellar 1930s-era debate team led by Dr. Melvin B. Tolson. Mrs. Henrietta Bell Wells, a native of Houston, Texas and the only female debater, spoke at length with Washington and his entourage about her memories of the debate team, Dr. M. B. Tolson and Wiley College. Also visiting the campus to talk about his illustrious father, was Dr. Melvin B. Tolson, Jr., a 1942 Wiley College graduate from Norman, Oklahoma. Dr. Tolson is a professor emeritus of the University of Oklahoma. "Dr. Tolson told me he was impressed by the amount of time I spent in the library and the fact that I wasn't too interested in boys," said Mrs. Wells. "He said being a debater required the most serious mind without all those distractions."
