Protect the Constitution, yes; protect the criminals, no
The FBI raid on the Congressional office of Louisiana U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, a Democrat, has provoked an outcry from congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert, a Republican, has been particularly outspoken in saying the FBI's raid was illegal and that any documents taken from Jefferson's office should be returned.

While we are tempted to believe that anytime both sides agree to anything it must be right, we won't take any stance on this legal issue. It is for scholars far more learned than us to delve into. It is even possible that the matter will go all the way to the Supreme Court.

But what does bother us is that Jefferson might actually get away with committing a crime if Congress' objections are borne out. This should not happen. If Jefferson is guilty he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
