Max Lale was eulogized Tuesday as a member of "the greatest generation" and honored for his contribution to history and to life.
Noon funeral services for Lale, 89, were held at Trinity Episcopal Church, with Father John M. Himes officiating. Burial followed in Colonial Gardens Cemetery with full military honors.
In his homily, Himes said he "had the pleasure of getting to know Max Lale during the few months that I have been here at Trinity Church. In his self-deprecating manner, he invited me into his life to share his joys and his sorrows," Himes said of the sessions.
And, he added: "Regardless of what subject we discussed, I always came away wondering who was ministering to whom."
Himes said Lale spoke often of his experiences in Europe during World War II. "It was obvious he treasured his days in the (U. S.) Army and hoped, perhaps, that's what he'd be remembered for."
