Grant conceds in Demo run-off

Texas Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Ben Z. Grant of Marshall was trailing late Tuesday night in a run-off election to determine which Democrat will face Republican David Dewhurst in the November general election. The Associated Press called the race in challenger Maria Luisa Alvarado's favor about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. At about 11 p.m., with all but 20 of the state's 5,645 precincts reporting, Ms. Alvarado was leading with 57.6 percent of the vote to Grant's 42.4 percent. She had 117,758 votes to his 86,534, according to the Texas Secretary of State's office.
