Pulpwood Queens book club comes to Marshall
By PHYLLIS BAILEY, Special to the News Messenger
Sunday, March 12, 2006
I recently had the pleasure of attending the Pulpwood Queen's, Girlfriend Weekend that took place in Jefferson. The event was founded by Kathy Patrick, who is noted for her endeavors to promote literacy and for attracting quality and popular authors to this area for intimate book reviews.

Although I enjoy reading, this is something I have never thought I would like to participate in before. After seeing Kathy on National News, morning talk shows and seeing her authors on morning talk shows and even on Oprah, it was still nothing I in which I ever wanted to participate. I was even questioned as to why I would go to Jefferson for something silly like a Girlfriend's Weekend.

One tiny, little thing changed my mind and made me open my heart and my mind to Kathy Patrick and see the Pulpwood Queens in a whole new light. During Christmas I read a beautiful, yet disturbing book called "The Glass Castle," based on a young woman's memories of her childhood – childhood less desirable than the way many of us grew up.
