Ellswick: Openness would have served the industrial park debate well
By Mike Elswick MNM
Thursday, March 02, 2006

The local debate and action concerning a proposal to pitch an industrial park site in Karnack on approximately 2,000 acres of land once part of the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant offers a good argument for openness in government.

Shrouded in secrecy well before the proposal came out in the open for public preview, the backers of the industrial park proposal never fully shed light on their plans nor their intentions. In fact, right up until a public hearing on the matter Monday night, those supporters of the proposal changed the public perception once again. Instead of saying they wanted most of a parcel of property still owned by the U.S. Army and not yet conveyed to the U.S. Department of the Interior, they now said they had their eyes on another portion of the former ammunitions plant property.
