Tuesdays meeting of the Harrison County Commissioners Court is difficult to write about because three commissioners stated in unequivocal terms they are firmly opposed to using any of the Longhorn lands for industrial purposes yet they did not vote to ask the Army to complete transfer of Longhorn lands to the refuge as had been planned.
That happened because Precinct 1 Commissioner Jerry Lomax made an honest mistake.
They were acting on his agenda item, but he let Judge Wayne McWhorter take control of his issue and make a motion to postpone voting on the issue for a month, which was quickly seconded by Precinct 2 Commissioner James Greer.
Lomax should have quickly reminded the Judge that he had placed the issue on the agenda for discussion and a vote, and the Judge should hold his motion until after the issue had been discussed.
Commissioner Jeffery Thompson tried to save the day by calling for discussion on the issue. He then read letters he had written to Senator Hutchison and stated firmly that after becoming educated on the issue he was opposed to diverting any Longhorn lands for an industrial site and ready to ask the Army to continue the land transfers.
