League of Women Voters to delve into Caddo issues Thursday
By GAIL K BEIL, Contributing Writer MNM
The Marshall/Harrison County League of Women Voters hope to shed light – not generate heat –concerning land use on the old Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant, according to LWV President Rachel Beard.

"What we're hoping to have is not a debate but an explanation of the issues surrounding the current controversy surrounding land use of the 8,000 acres once used to make pyrotechnics on the shores of Caddo Lake," she said

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Harrison County Courthouse Annex on the southeast side of the square. It is open to the public, and Ms. Beard is hoping for a good turnout.

Armed with maps and facts, Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge manager Mark Williams will provide his audience with the history of LAAP, how and why the greater part of it is under the protection of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior, and what he sees will happen next.

Despite all the print and talk about the possibility of part of it being given to the State of Texas for industrial development and the opposition to such an idea, there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the area and its future, said Williams.
