Where will FutureGen go?
By JULIA ROBB, Special Projects Editor MNM
The U.S. Department of Defense might not build its FutureGen power plant in the Lone Star State, but the newly-created FutureGen State Advisory Board will do its best to make the DOE shop Texas first.
The board the membership of which was announced Thursday is charged with reviewing recommendations for a plant site, and then using its final choice in the state's proposal to snag the world's first near-zero (fossil fuel) emissions power plant.
The research project, which will cost $1 billion, will create power and hydrogen, capture the resulting carbon dioxide, then permanently store the carbon dioxide in a geological formation.
