Description |
The Doctors' House/Clough-Beall Cottage
This ante-bellum (c. 1852) cottage, located at 513 West Burleson, was originally owned by Lt. Col. Jeremiah Clough, who was born in New Hampshire in 1821. Very little is know about him; he was a Confederate veteran and is buried in Marshall's Greenwood Cemetery.
The house has had many owners, but two of the most notable were Misses Emma Mae and Selma Brotze. These two sisters were teachers for 47 and 49 years, respectively, in the Marshall schools. Miss Emma was a principal and curriculum director; Miss Selma was an English teacher. Both were fondly spotlighted by Bill Moyers (Marshall HS graduate and student of the Brotzes) in his video Marshall, Texas: Marshall, Texas. |
