Description
The Marshall Visual Art Center was organized as a multi-faceted art center designed to meet several needs within the community. The needs were identified as,1)low cost studio space for artists, 2)affordable on-going art classes for youth, to supplement the decline of art activities in the public schools, 3)affordable on-going art lessons for adults at various skill levels, 4)opportunities for local and regional artists to exhibit their work, 5)opportunities for artists to increase their income, 6)an opportunity for Wiley College and East Texas Baptist University to offer more art classes through joint classes, and 7)a place where the cultural diversity of the community could be celebrated.

When the MVAC was formed, it was with the intention of approaching the operation of the MVAC without using funds already committed to the arts. The MVAC was organized around an approach to lead to self-sufficiency. The approach was to meet the identified needs in an art incubator arrangement. The MVAC functions as an art incubator by providing opportunities for artists to earn money, and by providing small lease space (studios) for artists to work in and to sell their work. It serves as an incubator for art instruction through cooperative agreements between the artists and the MVAC, for the artists to offer classes. The MVAC'S contribution to this agreement is to manage the classes by providing space, and equipment for art classes, as well as promoting the classes and handling the accounting for the classes. The instructors teach the classes, yet the instructor and the MVAC share the class fees. The MVAC is also providing teaching opportunities for art instuction/education through the two local colleges.

The purpose of the art gallery in the MVAC is to provide space for local and regional artists to display their work and to encourage them to pursue their careers in art.

MISSION STATEMENT It is the purpose of the Marshall Visual Art Center to support and advance the visual arts through inspiration, education, and exhibition. The Center provides community access to quality art education and serves as a resource for area schools, colleges, and individuals. The organization fosters the professional growth of artists and encourages cultural tourism.
