Common Sense is only a Whisper
What's really happening with Medicare?

This is so relevant to the days discussion of fiscal responsibility and HealthCare but in the United States of America the more powerful your lobby the louder your voice. You may have the best solution to Healthcare but without the lobby your voice is a whisper. Home medical equipment and HomeCare is already the most cost-effective, slowest-growing portion of Medicare spending, increasing only 0.75 percent per year according to the most recent National Health Expenditures data. That compares to more than 6 percent annual growth for Medicare spending overall. Home medical equipment represents only 1.6 percent of the Medicare budget. However, CMS "Medicare" continues to release stories of Medicare Fraud in the Home Health and Home Medical Equipment Industries. However the CBO or Congressional Budget office says Medicare spending could be cut by 30% by using more conservative approaches to patients with Chronic Diseases. It only makes sense. Hospitals save lives but there is a continuum of care that produces the best outcomes and the lowest costs. All areas of our Health system are equally important. A visit to the Hospital for a one day stay for a COPD respiratory episode runs $5500.00 dollars. If treated and managed in the home, it is only seven dollars a day. Home Care can provide almost all treatments that facilities can without the cost and risk of infection. Hospitals are also under pressure from Medicare and Insurance companies to prevent a patient from being admitted into the hospital more than once in a thirty day period for the same diagnosis. Home Care is an important piece of the continuum of care because chronically ill patients are treated in the home while drastically reducing recurring admissions to the hospital.

CMS currently is implementing "Competitive Bidding". Law makers are very skillful in naming bills and laws. The process is not Competitive at all. It allows National providers to low bid services while running out local Home Medical Operators. HME insiders estimate that this process will cost an estimated 1 million jobs while presenting little savings to taxpayers.

MNM: Our readers write -- FACTS ABOUT WEST BURLESON

Monday, February 08, 2010

From: J. Paul and Mary Ann Smith, Marshall

My wife and I have lived on West Burleson Street for 57-plus years living in a home built in the early 1850s, raising a family of six. We have witnessed the closing of Bishop College and the demolition the Plantation home of Lucy Holcomb Pickens, Wyalcuing. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2009 we watched helplessly while heavy equipment decimated trees and land on the lots next door.

The lots in question were recently surveyed and a building contractor from Longview was examining the property approximately four to six weeks before the clearing started. He told me that he was submitting a bid to build a Dollar General Store on theses lots. I told him these lots facing Burleson would be a parking lot. I told him this would be commercial parking lot and was still not zoned for this.

I asked City Commissioner Jack Hester, a friend, if he knew anything about this, he said he would check into this. I asked him several times at church and he stated no one seemed to know anything about this zoning changes, therefore I dropped the matter.

Sinatra song has fueled karaoke killings in Philippines

Editor's note:
The "sharped-eyed" Jack Canson spotted this article and immediately reported it to ETT. We are posting it as a public service. East Texas karaoke singers be warned.

Norimitsu Onishi, The New York Times

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines -- After a day of barbering, Rodolfo Gregorio went to his neighborhood karaoke bar still smelling of talcum powder. Putting aside his glass of Red Horse Extra Strong beer, he grasped a microphone with a habitu's self-assuredness and briefly stilled the room with the Platters' "My Prayer."

Next, he belted out crowd-pleasers by Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. But Gregorio, 63, a witness to countless fistfights and occasional stabbings from disputes over karaoke singing, did not dare choose one beloved classic: Frank Sinatra's version of "My Way."

"I used to like 'My Way,' but after all the trouble, I stopped singing it," he said. "You can get killed."

Looking back: Second Saturday Car Show in Marshall -- July 2009
Editors's note:
On February 13 the Second Saturday Car Shows return to Marshall.

This car show was the "brain child" of Bo Ellis. He has worked hard to make it a success. His hard work is showing results. This is the third month for the show and each month the show gets bigger.

Take a look at the photos from this month's event.

How will the new board members be selected?

By Ron Munden

ETT received the following feedback from one of our readers:

Article: BDC/CVB to begins the transition
How will the new CVB Board members be selected?

Based on the guidance from DDI's John Kelch, the short answer is that downtown building owners will nominate members of their community. The Hotel Association will nominate two members. Finally the business owners will nominate two members. The BDC will review the nominations with each of the special interest groups and finalize the nomination list. This will include nominating a brand representative, the seventh member of the new board. The nominations list will be presented to the City Commissioners by the BDC. The City Commissioners will make the final selection.

Now here is the long answer to the question.
