Suggestions for Wonderland of Lights 2008

Bryan Partee suggested that ETTO provide its readers a way to submit suggestions for improving Wonderland of Lights. Bryan, like many others, does not want to see Wonderland of Lights go away - but he does know it needs to change.

On-line Suggestion Box

This is a listing of suggestions for changing/improving Wonderland of Lights. Take a look at the suggestions - then add your own suggestions. All items will be monitored but all items will be posted to the list. Because of the monitoring, it might take a day to see your items on the posted list.

At least weekly, between Thanksgiving and Christmas have group such as the Marshall symphony, bands from MHS and ETBU and other invited bands or orchestras from out of town, have a concert of Christmas music in downtown Marshall. This would also be a great opportunity to have a "sing-a-long" for public participation and to teach the youth traditional Christmas carols. Through proper advertising and promotion, this would bring others from neighboring towns to Marshall to listen, sing, shop and eat in Marshall.

Buy some more lights!
From my daughter: "Buy some more lights! Make it interesting! Add some color! Add something exciting like a flying Santa Claus. It's the same bull every year!"

From me: Live Art, Live music, encourage more church and school activities etc... It would be nice if the city would compile a list of the local landscaping or similar businesses that provide light hanging for the poeple who can't do it themselves - and advertise that so people know that it's there.

Suggestion: Have some fun!
We have so many gifted artist in Marshall. I never understood why Marshall didn't showcase them more during the Wonderland of Lights. I'd like to see an ice sculpting competition!

Christmas Trees
Work out a trade either with a local Christmas tree grower, or any independant tree seller to give them space to sell trees on the square. This would add life to the proposed vendor area. This way when tourists arrive in downtown they would be greated by crowds of local citizens. If the locals don't spend time in downtown, then how do we expect tourists to. I would rather buy a Christmas tree from a local business or organization than from Lowes or Walmart.

Downtown shops
one more time ...

I've read the requests that downtown shop owners maintain extended open hours during Wonderland - a great suggestion, but please remember this means more expense for the owner - extra personnel, utilities, etc. A store must turn a profit, or at least break even, to stay in business. If there are no buyers during the evening hours, then the store owner has lost money, having only provided a rest room for the evening wanderer. Perhaps there could be some perks for the downtown stores, to encourage the longer hours. Honey attracts more flies than vinegar!

I think the timing is just about right now - it's a Marshall tradition to turn on the lights on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but I think that Friday night would be even better. I rarely get to attend on Wednesday night because I'm cooking for Thanksgiving. Waiting until the Christmas parade is too long. Although some downtown shops have been closed right after Christmas in the past, I believe that most were open this past season. True, the traffic is way down, but I think all the stores and restaurants would profit from being available.

Concentrating on lighting up the square and downtown areas is most important, especially making sure the courthouse is well lit. Neighborhood lighting is important, too - perhaps a competiton for best in a neighborhood, and then desirable prizes could be given to the winners in various categories, as is done with the Downtown Windows of Wonderland Competition.

I've seen some excellent suggestions for improving Wonderland, and I believe Wonderland 2008 will be the best ever!

Get the Money Collectors Off The Street
If you only make one change -- get those people off the street. They have a very negative impact on Wonderland of Lights.

The Bucket People
1. get rid of the bucket people. It appears you have to pay to drive into downtown (yes, I know you don't, but visitors think they do.)

2. Get the lights OUT of the neighborhoods and focus on downtown "Washington Square" as DD called it. 3. A good retailer KNOWS that if you sell candy to put all the candy together. If you sell towels, put all the towels together. If you sell wine, SELL WINE. Do the same thing with the lights. MASS lighting is much more impressive than scattered around lighting. Great "themeage" on side streets this year. Add to that and keep it going. I sure did miss my longhorn on the courthouse : ( 4. Make sure the lights actually work for more than one hour. Replace the bulbs. 5. Make folks get out of the car and walk. They will stay LONGER resulting in MORE SALES revenue for VENDORS and RETAILERS = MORE SALES TAX DOLLARS for next year. 6. GET MORE VENDORS that provide INTERACTIVE sites. Ice rink looked WONDERful this year. Add to that: carnival theme, something! Carousel, petting zoo, scheduled singers from the schools, churches, local bands. GET ER DONE!

MAINTAIN WHAT YOU HAVE
and quit wasting time and money on areas outside of downtown. $300,000+ was spent in 1999-2000 on lighting the dome and coupula. Since that time, not one light bulb has been replaced. I go up every year and program the lighting system, and every year, I notice more and more bulbs burnt out. This last year, I would guess up to 60% were burnt out. If you look at photos from the 2000 christmas vs. this year, the difference is obvious.

East Texas Towns
Set a cutoff date for this list, maybe shortly after Easter, take the compilation to the newspaper, to each city commissioner, to the city manager, to the main street director, to the chamber (both director and president), etc. Then you need to task them to find a way to realize what is feasible and implement. If this means an outside 'wonderland committee' made up of citizens, then so be it. It does no good to collect such great ideas if they are going to simply sit there to an audience of many but have no action.

I agree with a previous post, get rid of the employees who take in the money on the streets for visiting the square. This is so negative. I also like the idea of concentrating everything downtown. Food vendors, carolers, church groups acting out the Christmas story on a corner, Wiley and ETBU could help with some of the entertainment needed downtown. I agree with starting the WOL with the Christmas Parade not the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Improve WOL not get rid of it. After all, Marshall is Centerstage. WOL is a natural for being Centerstage.

Mary P Smith, Rodney Beal
Bring back the vendors. Have them all around the courthouse and down Washington toward Hwy 80. Bring back the ice sculptures, art exhibits. Have public events at the Marshall that real people can afford to go to. Have more children's activities, a train ride, a carousel, old fashioned games. Start a 'shop downtown' campaign. Have giveaways sponsored by the local businesses. Enlist the businesses downtown to stay open late. Enlist the hotels to offer special rates. Start a wonderland B&B campaign. Live music every night...outdoors, in the restaraunts, street performers, open mic/amateur showcase, songwriting contest, karaoke, square dancers, cloggers, ballroom dancers, drum corps, jam sessions. Make it a music and arts festival as well. Host car shows, horse shows, tractor shows, dog shows. Have portrait artists, caricature artists, story tellers, tumblers, school bands. Bring in the Shriners with the little cars. Have a spaghetti supper, pancake supper, make it a dinner theatre, chili cookoff, bbq cookoff, best hot chocolate contest. Have an FFA/4H show. Have a live nativity. Construct a maze from wood with hinged gates that can be changed around to keep it interesting. How about a tunnel of lights? By all means, beef up the lights! The operative words here are WONDER and FESTIVAL. You have to get people out of their cars. Take away the street donations and have paid parking instead. Have multiple small parades, mardi gras style but with a holiday theme. Put wonderland workers in costumes. You have to have LOTS of something for EVERYONE, and while the whole town should participate, the main attraction should be concentrated to downtown. You could actually employ some of your talent, I could go on forever, but let me just say this: ADVERTISE ADVERTISE FAR AND WIDE AND WELL IN ADVANCE....ADVERTISE!!!

Start Date #2
Having read the comment about changing the dates of wonderland (which we agree with), since the parade is on the first Saturday, make that the kickoff to the wonderland and stay open for four or five weeks. You could maybe end with the ball dropping on 12/31 as something to create closure for that year.

Get People Out of Their Cars
Wonderland of Lights should be restructured to so that it encourages people to get out of their cars and walking. It should be restructured to be more experiential not just visual.

In order to accomplish this, the first two blocks of North Washington Ave. should be closed the traffic. The first block should be dedicated to vendor spaces. The second block should be an entertainment venue.

Target Market
Why do the powers that be focus on whats called in the industry (which I doubt they even know what that is) the S.M.E.R.F market segment. Busses of senior citizens that won't event get off of the buss to visit the 3 business in downtown that are open DO NOT bring a community tourism dollars.

Get Rid of the Money Collectors on the Street
Get the people that collect money at the collection boxes in the middle of the street off the street! They had a negative impact on Wonderland of Lights. These are paid employees and there is no way to control the money that is collected. I have only heard negative comments about them.

Instead of the people on the street build a set of attractive and locked donation boxes. Distribute these to key locations like the Weisman Center. Use the money saved from eliminating the wages of the money collectors to build these donation boxes.

Focus & More lights
We need to focus on the downtown exclusively and not worry about Duncan Edition or Azalea way. If they want to do lights, let those neighborhoods do lights.

Having said that, we need to then get all the downtown to do something. We're talking from the bus station to the Visual Art Center. We have to make this really lit up and get everyone involved in it.

Music
I have one of two musical suggestions.

#1 Get a calendar and every night from 6pm -8:30 pm have wandering Christmas carolers throughout the downtown. One night you can get Ebeneezer Methodist (and Roosevelt Washington) and one night you can get the crew at Central Baptist (who I hear has a great choir). I am sure the music teachers at Carver or MHS would want to put some kids on for display.

#2 Speakers. One think I notice when I go to the Louisiana Boardwalk is that the same song is playing everywhere I go. We need to get the downtown outfitted with weatherproof speakers throughout and have them wired to one central location. This would also allow us to put out reminders "Don't forget the Bethesda Choir will be on the corner of Austin and North Washington in 15 minutes to sing Christmas carols".

FOCUS
Focus on the downtown area - bounded by railroad (Ginochio) on the North, Travis St on the South, Alamo to the East and Grove to the West. Actuall, the main streets should be Washington and Hosuton. If neighborhoods want to continue - that is great - but Marshall Festivals needs to focus only on the downtown area. Spend all efforts and money to make this area the best there has ever been. Make this a walking tour and forget about the driving tours - this takes to much effort and to many volunteers. You have to keep people in a concentrated area to make it look as though it is well attended. A well attended event makes others desire to be there. GET RID of some of the old worn out displays. If you have displays outside the downtown area - they should focus on getting people downtown. (Make sure that if you have a sign that tells people to turn left - the arrow does not point to the right - as one new sign does.)

Change the dates
Change the date to the first of December and end it around Dec 25.This year the shops and restaurants were closed the week of Christmas and the tourtist traffic was way down during that time anyway. This way people will have time to put up lights during the Thanksgiving weekend and no one will be disappointed when they come in that weekend because there are not lights up. This year the festival was 42 days long! This was way too long! Make it so it is concentrated during a few weeks time and add quality entertainment and things to do.

Lighting
I second the suggestion to get rid of the colored lights! On the trees that line N. Washington, just wrap the trunks, very tightly, and forget about the leafed branches.

Improve Grand Ave.
Have the businesses on Grand Ave. decorate their stores. Grand is pretty gloomy during the WOL. Also, eateries and gas stations that make money off of WOL should put up some kind of decorations, even if it's just a Christmas tree.

Hire someone different
How about hiring someone different to handle the events. Marshall has a habbit of hiring the same few people to to everything. Maybe if you let the younger citizens get involved in the planning process, you would have lights that actually worked. The same people that ran it into the ground are never going to be able to bring life back to it! Because, the Marshall way is to take credit for everything and actually do nothing. They sure did congratulate themselves on a successful "Wonderland" this year and it is clear that the citizens of Marshall thought it was a disaster.
